WEEKLY DEVOTION

Trained in the Word

Every person on Earth has a gospel on which they build their life on. It could be the gospel of money, reputation, self-promotion, success, or a million other things. Unfortunately with this truth about the broken world, false gospels are spread and taught constantly, religious or not. Jesus warns us to watch out for these false teachers  and fake gospels, so that we can . build our life on the truth of who He is and what He's done.  So, knowing this, how do we combat these false teachings? How do we build our life on the one, true gospel?

Simple. We read God's word. We train ourselves and study what the Bible says, so that when we encounter false teachings, we know the truth. We can compare what the world tells us with what Jesus tells us is the truth. He is truth!  You can't know the Word, and you can't know God, without reading what He says. The Bible is God's ultimate revelation of Himself, and without it, we miss out on knowing Him as He intended. And so, sit down with Him. Read what He has to say. He's always there, waiting.

Being on watch.

Prayer

Jesus,

Thank you for waking us up this morning. Thank you for another day to learn about who You are and what You've done. As we seek a deeper relationship with you, give us a deeper thirst for Your word. We want to know you. Let Your Word become more than a supplement. Let it become our lifeline. We love you. We thank you. We praise you. Amen.

Reflection

Why is it hard for us in today's culture to be in the Word?

‘You don't stumble into godliness. You train into it.’ - Matt Chandler. Discuss  with your group how this quote applies to the passage.

What effect has the Word had in Your life?

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits. Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’"
