Giving to the Needy

Matthew 6:1-4

"Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you."

Glorifying God, Not Ourselves.

All throughout scripture, God calls us to give to others and serve those around us. Jesus then builds on this command by saying that our giving needs to be in secret. So often in our culture today, we want to serve others for the intent of glorifying ourselves by posting it on instagram or immediately telling those around us.

However, God calls us to not be like our culture and to glorify Him in all that we do. So, what does this mean for us in our daily lives? Help others and in doing so make sure that our intentions are aligned with God's plan for our lives. When we help others, it can stem from our insecurities. We should not want to do good to appease others, but for the ultimate goal of leading others to Christ.

Clear our hearts and our minds as we come before you. We confess that we take the glory for ourselves instead of giving it to you. Let us put our insecurities aside and delight in you only. Take me down from my pedestal that I built. Bring to our mind that you love us no matter what we do. We do not need to love others to be loved back because the Father of all creation loves us. You love us so much that you sacrificed your Son for us. We thank you, we love you and we praise you.

  • Who's glory do you truly desire to display?

  • Do you reflect God into the world, or are you reflecting yourself?

  • Discuss this quote "We cannot do great things on this Earth, only small things with great love" and how does this apply to the passage?
