WEEKLY DEVOTION

The Lord's Prayer

Matthew 6:9-14

Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you."

Breaking it Down

"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name."

This reminds us of who we are praying to, the God who created us, loves us and hears us. He is also all-powerful and deserves our highest praise and respect.

"Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven"

This should be our worldview that this world is not our home and we need to have an eternal perspective. We need to pray for the present and the future because God is in control of all eternity.

"Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors"

This section reminds us  that God always provides for his people. He didn't forget about the Israelites in the desert, and He won't forget about his people now. He provides for us in both our daily needs and through His Word.

"And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil."

This reminds us that although we are saved through Christ there is still a spiritual war going on. We are still prone to the attacks of the devil, so we need the strength of God to guide our path.

Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen

Reflection

  • Why do you think Jesus taught us to pray?

  • Discuss Colossians 3:16-17

  • Discuss this quote:
"The Lord's Prayer reminds us that God longs for His people to communicate with Him, not just in church on Sunday, but wherever we are and whatever our need"
