NOVEMBER 18-22 | 2019
“And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you."
Drawing yourself closer to God.
Fasting is denying yourself good things that you want in order to draw closer to God. We are called to fast to express how serious our sins are and how great God's grace is. The verse calls us to fast willingly and not for the world. If you fast in order to get attention from others, you will not get all you can out of your fast. We shouldn't advertise our decision to fast, but instead we should do it with a heart desiring God to fulfill it.
The portion of the verse that says to anoint your head is telling us to act no different about fasting than we would go about washing our face in the morning. The reason it is important to not advertise your motives behind fasting is because the reason behind fasting will determine how it effects your life.

What makes fasting so hard?
Why do you think fasting is so overlooked in our society?
