Being People of Truth
“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil."
Honoring what we say we'll do.
You've probably heard 'Let your yes be yes and your no be no' before. The underlying theme of this week's passage is truth. What does it look like to be truthful and honest in a world that doesn't believe in absolute truth? If we really are and live as people who honor our word, we shouldn't have to make promises or oaths. Our word should be enough. As Christians, we should be known to show up for others.
We should be known for honoring our word, and keeping our commitments. We should be authentic in how dependable we are, and how we don't act in a way that contradicts our words. And so, let's be people that show up when we say we will. Let's be people who say we will, and follow through. Let's be people of our word. Speak what is true, and be who you are!
Thank you for the opportunity that you give us each and every day to honor and glorify you. Help us to be people of truth this week as we look to keep our word. Thank you for the truth that you are, and that you've given us. We thank you, we love you, and we praise you.
When do you have a tendancy to lie or not follow through? How can you work against it?
What would SCA look like if we all were people who kept our word? Would it be different? How so?
"Oaths are redundant to truthful people." Discuss the quote with your group.
